Today, I want to talk with you about how you can generate more income even if you have a small playing field. First, what kind of foundation are you going to build for your annual golf event?
Hopefully a STRONG one. One of the most important ways to build a solid foundation for your event is to get as many participants involved in your activities, including players who don't play in your actual event.
A simple way to get more participation -- regardless of your events size -- more effectively is to promote a Golf Skills Challenge. One of the things that I do -- and I'm going to encourage you to do the same -- is to attract players of all skill levels. Yesterday we talked about a putting challenge to attract even more participants.
The Golf Skills Challenge -- here is how it works!
This event tests players abilities in golf's eight major fundamentals:
1. chip shot
2. greenside bunker
3. long drive
4. middle iron tee shot
5. pitch over a hazard
6. putting
7. short iron, and ...
8. trouble shot
The challenge is played on nine holes. Each player gets three shots per skill. The best score of the three shots counts toward the overall total. Players are grouped in divisions. Players register by filling out an entry form and paying a registration fee (typically $20-$30). Tee times accommodate up to eight players and are scheduled in twelve minute intervals from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
It takes approximately two hours to complete the 8-skill circuit. Scoring targets are painted on each green, with points being awarded from 1-6. Mulligans (three extra swings) can be purchased prior to the round and can be used at any point during the competition.
This type of golf challenge may be set up and is staffed by your own volunteers. Charity volunteers can be used to monitor the holes in exchange for a donations to their organization. The amount of money donated to charities can easily reach $3,500-$4,500 per weekend challenge.
